It was built to haul the heavier commuter passenger trains on the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway. Subsequently it carried the name Thundersley which is a district in the north of the Castle Point Borough, in southeast Essex.
The four locomotives ordered by the LTSR were numbered 79–82 and were named after places in Essex, near the LTSR route. After absorption by the Midland Railway in 1912, they were renumbered 2176–2179 and their names were removed.
No. 80 ”Thundersley” is a Class 79 4-4-2T suburban tank engine steam locomotive that was built for the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway by Robert Stephenson and Company in 1909.
