Where are the 1972 Andes plane crash survivors now? Of the 16 survivors, 14 are still alive. José Luis “Coche” Inciarte died in 2023 of cancer, per the AFP, as did Javier Methol in 2015.

In 1972 a team of Uruguayan rugby players headed toward Chile crashed into a remote region in the Andes. Out of 40 players, many people lost their lives in the crash. Several others died agonized and drawn deaths of internal injuries. Poverty stricken Chile canceled their search after ten days.

Jun 17, 2023 · Javier Methol showed incredible bravery in the face of terror and managed to survive for 72 days in the Andes. Once back home, he maintained a close bond with most other survivors and would attend their yearly get-togethers on December 22 to commemorate the heroic rescue.
Alive is the story of an airplane flight that crashed over the Andes mountains. It is also the story of how some of the stranded passengers survived following the crash and their reintegration into the society they left behind.
