Dec 23, 2008 · Mickey Rourke in "The Wrestler." “The Wrestler” is about a man who can do one thing well, and keeps on doing it because of need, weary skill and pride. He wrestles for a living. Pro wrestling is a fake sport, right? Yes, but as an activity, it’s pretty real. I watch it on TV with fascination.
Aronofsky's Black Swan explored the world of the 'high arts' and as such it is a perfect companion piece to The Wrestler, a masterful depiction of dedication and self destruction in the realm of the 'low arts'. Carried by a performance of a lifetime, this film is a heartbreaking slice of gritty realism.
