The end of the anime, and end of evangelion depressed me to another level, and even though the endings had silver linings for Shinji, they were so much more brutal than the manga. I was really happy to see things reset to a situation where Shinji could learn from his inner battles and it wasn't just "the world is fucked now sucks".
It's not a happy ending. The end of 26 is euphoria at revelation, it's a feeling of bliss having overcome a mental barrier. but the ending isn't happy. it's just being willing to live in a painful, agonizing world. being willing to go through hell just to live. The rebuilds ending feels like the happiness you went through hell for.
