    • Carolyn Cox
    • American Gods. This is it. Of all the best Neil Gaiman books, American Gods comes out on top. This does come with a few caveats, however. American Gods isn’t a perfect novel; it is overly long and its protagonist is frustratingly bland compared to the rest of the book’s cast.
    • Neverwhere. Neverwhere was Neil Gaiman’s first novel. He had already made a massive name for himself in the American comics industry thanks to The Sandman but now he was stepping into the world of the novel, and what an entrance.
    • Smoke and Mirrors. I have already mentioned more than once that Neil Gaiman’s imagination is best seen through the lens of his short stories, and Smoke and Mirrors represents the very best of them.
    • Good Omens. Written as a joint effort by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, Good Omens is the book on this list with the biggest cult following. People who like this book really, really love it (myself included, of course).
    • 10 The Ocean at The End of The Lane
    • 9 Neverwhere
    • 8 Norse Mythology
    • 7 Doctor Who: Nightmare in Silver
    • 6 M Is For Magic
    • 5 The Graveyard Book
    • 4 Good Omens
    • 3 American Gods
    • 2 The Sandman Series
    • 1 Coraline

Definitely the most surreal entry on our list, The Ocean at the End of the Lane shows Gaiman's incredible ability to blend genres to create something incredible. Part reflective piece, part dark fantasy, and part cosmic horror, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a great way to not only introduce the author but begin our list as well. With evil ali...

You might have heard of the BBC miniseries, but the book that came after is definitely better. In most fantasy novels, the human protagonist will accidentally stumble upon the doorway to a magical world and adventure ensues, right? Well, what would happen if the fantasy world came to the protagonist? The answer, Neverwhere. RELATED: 10 Comics To Re...

Because who doesn't love a good, old-fashioned, Viking saga? One of the more recent releases on our list, Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology is a collection of the classic Viking myths told in the author's definitive fashion. Definitely taking some elements of American Gods into play, Gaiman's take on the Viking epics is definitely a recommended read fo...

Did you think they would all be books? The Doctor Who episode "Nightmare in Silver" definitely carries the Neil Gaiman seal of quality. An abandoned amusement park on another planet, a cabinet of curiosities, and a lost emperor definitely sound like elements and settings we'd find in one of his books. We're including this collection of short stories simply because it contains some of the author's best. Featuring such entries as The Case of the Four-and-Twenty Blackbirds, Don't Ask Jack, and How to Talk to Girls at Parties, it's certainly an ideal way to take in some of his short fiction. Taking inspiration from Ray Bradbury's R is for Rocket, th...

If you were to take Disney's Jungle Book and set it in a gothic graveyard complete with ghosts, ghouls, and vampires, you'd have Neil Gaiman's Graveyard Book. Where Mowgli was raised by Raksha and her clan of wolves, Bod is raised by various ghosts in the graveyard. It's an eerie little tale perfect for those chilly October nights. RELATED: By Crom...

You've probably already seen the Amazon Prime adaptation, but believe us when we tell you that the book is a must-read for not only fans of Neil Gaiman, but the late great Sir Terry Pratchett as well. Who would have thought that the last days of humanity could be such a ripe subject for a comedy? When a demon and an angel must join forces to save t...

Though the TV series is good, the book is a completely different experience. Shadow Moon still has to join forces with Mr. Wednesday to save humanity from the clutches of Mr. World and the New Gods, but it's a much slower and at times more surreal burn. It's one of those books where you get exactly what you want from the premise, just not in the wa...

If you read only one of Neil Gaiman's brilliantly written comic series, make sure its Sandman. Forget about Angela, Lucifer, or anything from the Marvel 1602 universe and take a trip to the dream world with Gaiman's psychedelic and immortal Endless. Only Neil Gaiman could take a masked detective and turn him into the god of the dream world. This is...

Those of you who have read Coraline know it's not just a children's book, but one of the most bone-chilling pieces of horror fiction ever put to paper. Before it was brought to the big screen by Henry Selick, the book was one of Neil Gaiman's award-winning novels that both frightened and delighted readers of all ages. Thanks to this novel, we can n...
