The Cleavon Little Scholarship, which provides assistance to minority students, was created at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts through a campaign led by Little's fellow alumnus and co-star Judd Hirsch.
Versatile, charismatic actor Cleavon Little was born on June 1, 1939, in Oklahoma but grew up in California and attended San Diego College. He earned a scholarship to Juilliard and moved to New York, then trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and was soon appearing off-Broadway.

The Cleavon Little Scholarship, which helps nonwhite students, was created at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts through a campaign led by Little's fellow alumnus and co-star, Judd Hirsch. To become an Actor or Actress.
He was a scholarship student at the ‘American Academy of Dramatic Arts’ where he was first noticed in 1966 for his performance in a production of ‘Macbeth’. Initially, Cleavon’s screen career looked very promising and critics were expecting him to become a leading film actor, but his movie career did not quite live up to its full potential.
He earned a scholarship to Juilliard and moved to New York, then trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and was soon appearing off-Broadway. Classically trained ("Hamlet" "A Midsummer Night's Dream"), he won the Tony award for a less weighty musical, "Purlie", which took him west.
