Die sets are assemblies that link the upper and lower die holders. They include guide pins or posts, guide pin bushings, heel blocks, heel plates, and die shoes.
- Die Plates, Shoes, and Die Sets. Die plates, shoes, and die sets are steel or aluminum plates that correspond to the size of the die (see introductory photo and Figure 1).
- Guide Pins and Bushings. Guide pins, sometimes referred to as guide posts or pillars, function together with guide bushings to align both the upper and lower die shoes precisely (see Figure 2).
- Heel Blocks and Heel Plates. Heel blocks are special steel blocks that are precision-machined, screwed, doweled, and often welded to both the upper and lower die shoes (see Figure 3).
- Screws, Dowels, and Keys. Screws fasten and secure the working components to both the upper and lower die shoes. The socket head cap screw is the most popular fastener used in stamping dies.
- Simple Die: Simple die or single operation die designed to perform only a single operation of each stroke of the press slide. Simple die can be further classified according to the functions such as cutting and forming.
- Compound Die: A compound die performs multiple operations like cut or punch can be done in one stroke. For example, it can perform cutting and forming operations simultaneously in one stroke.
- Combination Die: The diagram of the combination die is shown in the figure. In this type of dies, the cutting and bending operations are combined and carried out in a single operation.
- Transfer Die: The transfer die uses a single press to operate multiple tools. In high volume production work, transfer die comes with more advantages.
