St Mary's Music School is a music school in Scotland in the West End of Edinburgh, for children aged 9 to 19 and is also the Choir School of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral. [1] The school, which is non-denominational, provides education for children with a special talent in music, and is Scotland's only full-time independent specialist music school.
St Mary’s Music School is a dedicated and energetic centre of learning where we are continually inspired by our surroundings, by the accomplishments of our pupils and by the superb teachers who deliver unrivalled tuition, both musical and academic, to pupils aged from 8 to 19 years.
We can trace our history back to 1880, when St Mary’s Music School was founded for the education of the choirboys of the newly built St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, completed and consecrated in 1879.
It is a co-educational, non-denominational specialist music school, offering a world class standard of music and academic education to musically gifted children aged 9-19 years. It is also the Choir School of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh.

St Mary’s Music School is one of five Government-supported specialist music schools in the UK and the only one of its kind in Scotland. We offer a world class standard of music and academic education to musically gifted children aged 9-19 years in an inspiring, inclusive and supportive environment.
Jun 24, 2024 · Like the choir schools attached to the English cathedrals, St Mary’s Music School was built to educate, house and train the choristers, and that has been its function for over a hundred years. It is the only such establishment in Scotland, since the English choral tradition was not part of the Church of Scotland’s remit.
