In this chapter, we consider three major functions that have been prominent in cognitive accounts of attention (Kahneman 1973, Posner & Boies 1971): (a) orienting to sensory events; (b) detecting signals for focal (conscious) processing, and (c) maintaining a vigilant or alert state.

In Images of Mind, co-authored with Marcus Raichle in 1994, Posner investigated the brain localization of cognitive functions by examining patterns of brain activation during progressively more complex cognitive tasks.
One goal of this volume is to examine the anatomy and development of brain networks of attention. This chapter defines three networks—alerting, orienting, and executive—and gives a summary of the tools used in exploring them.

May 8, 2014 · In this paper, we first outline the connection between attention and self-regulation. In the next section, we examine measurement of individual differences in attention in adults. The heart of the paper summarizes the relation of early temperament (7 months) to later temperament and attention (age: 7 years).
The human brain localizes mental operations of the kind posited by cognitive theories. These local computations are integrated in the performance of cognitive tasks such as reading.
