    • 1. (1890–1922), Irish nationalist leader and politician. A Member of Parliament for Sinn Fein, he was one of the negotiators of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. In 1922 he acted as head of the provisional government of the Irish Free State and then as commander of the Free State army in the civil war. He was killed in an ambush in August 1922.
