C. S. Lewis was born in Belfast in 1898, and came up to the University of Oxford in 1917 with a scholarship to University College. His undergraduate career was interrupted by war service in France, and he graduated with a double First in Greats (classical philosophy and history) in 1922, then a First in English in 1923.
From April 26 until September, Lewis was a student at University College, Oxford. Three years after the outbreak of WWI in Britain, he enlisted in the British army and was billeted in Keble College, Oxford, for officer’s training. His roommate was Edward Courtnay Francis “Paddy” Moore (1898-1918).
