- Beats can be divided into two types: on-beats and off-beats. On-beats are the strong, emphasized beats that occur on the downbeat, usually beats 1 and 3 in a 4/4 time signature. Off-beats, on the other hand, are the weaker, less emphasized beats that occur between the on-beats, usually beats 2 and 4 in a 4/4 time signature.

Sep 22, 2022 · In a 4/4 time signature, beats directly between all four beats (1,2,3,4) are called off-beats. If we were to use the 1 E & A counting system to count out the beats we say "one and two and three and four and". The "ands" here represent the off-beat.
It is not difficult to see that the pulse of the song is in beats 1 and 3, so they are called strong beats, or “on” beats. If an instrument were playing its notes in beats 2 and 4, we would say that it is playing offbeat, as its note marking is taking place in the weak beats of the song.
