    • The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) With one of the most expressive faces in cinema history, Renée Jeanne Falconetti portrays the title martyr during the trial in England that led to her execution.
    • Silence (2016) There are no easy answers in Martin Scorsese’s Silence... hardly any answers at all, really, and that’s part of its power. The story follows two Portuguese Jesuit priests who travel to Tokugawa-era Japan in order to search for their missing (or perhaps merely silent) mentor in a time when Christians were violently repressed in the country.
    • Calvary (2014) Of all the mentioned films, Calvary is probably the toughest to classify: it has comic elements, both subtle and absurd, as well as deeply tragic ones alongside more thoughtful notes.
    • Miracle of Marcelino (1955) Wildly popular in Spain, and successful in the U.S., as well, Miracle of Marcelino dramatizes a Medieval legend involving a coarse orphan abandoned at a monastery.
    • Mother Teresa of Calcutta. This 2003 film, starring Olivia Hussey, captures the powerful story of St. Teresa of Kolkata. The movie follows the trials and triumphs of her self-sacrificing journey and, most wonderfully, depicts those key moments in which God intervened for the saint.
    • Fatima. Fatima, released in August of 2020, is nothing short of a masterpiece. The film is based on the 1917 Marian apparitions to three Portuguese children: Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco.
    • The Passion of the Christ. This movie is a staple in the world of Catholic film. I watched it for the first time when I was 12 years old, and I vividly remember the profound impact it had on my faith.
    • The Way. The Waytells the story of a business-consumed man whose son dies while walking the Camino de Santiago. In honour of his son, he decides to complete the 800-kilometre pilgrimage himself, scattering his son's ashes at every stop.
