Route 66 Association is the generic name of the non-profit associations established for preservation, restoration and promotion of the historic U.S. Route 66. They exist in all 8 Route 66 states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. [1]

The worldwide, non-profit organization dedicated to directing the public’s attention to the importance of U.S. Highway Route 66 in America’s cultural heritage and acquiring the federal, state and private support necessary to preserve the historic landmarks and revitalize the economies of communities along the entire 2,400-mile stretch of road.

Jan 23, 2024 · Starting in 1987 when The Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona was founded, many groups were formed to preserve, protect and promote the grand old road. Their efforts have paid off: Numerous landmarks and historic buildings have been nominated and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The first Route 66 associations were founded in Arizona in 1987 and, in 1989, Missouri (incorporated in 1990) [33] [34] and Illinois. [35] Other groups in the other US 66 states soon followed. In 1990, the state of Missouri declared US 66 in that state a "State Historic Route".
Among the more famous still associated with Route 66 are the El Vado and Zia Motor Lodge in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In the early years of Route 66, service station prototypes were developed regionally through experimentation, and then were adopted universally across the country.
