Stalag Luft III, situated in Sagan, was a camp primarily for captured Allied airmen, many of whom were officers and considered high-risk prisoners by the Germans. The camp was designed to be "escape-proof," with features such as seismographic microphones to detect underground activity and elevated huts to prevent tunneling.
