Nuneaton’s name came from a 12th century Benedictine nunnery (part of which still exists) around which much of the town centre grew, including the market which was established in 1247. The nunnery fell into disrepair after 1539, with Henry VIII’s dissolution of the Monasteries and the market was relocated into the heart of the town centre where it remains to this day.
