Getting to Maglie is not complicated as it is one of the best connected towns, especially if you start from Lecce. Clearly, as we always like to remember, the best way to get around Salento is by car, especially in off season, but there are connections between the main towns throughout the whole year.
The Cathedral of Maglie
Among the things to see in Maglie is undoubtedly its cathedral, the former collegiate church of the archpriesthood. Dating back to the 18th century, it has a wide, mistilinear façade. The interior, in the shape of a Latin cross, has three naves and two altars of great artistic importance, sculpted in Lecce stoneand hand-painted. There are several works in this church, but we would like to emphasise the important presence of two ovals painted by Oronzo Tiso: the Madonna with Child and St Gaeta...
Church-Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows
The Church of Our Lady of Sorrowswas erected between 1722 and 1725 and became a Marian shrine in 1988. The façade is divided into two orders, while the interior has a single nave with a high altar and six side altars. There are also some valuable paintings and other important works of art. To the side of the church is a ‘calvary’ in Lecce stone built in 1964 to a design by the Magliano painter Antonio Montefusco.
Church of the Madonna delle Grazie
The Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, built in Baroque style, has a simple and linear façade that differs from the typical Baroque ones. Its construction from the first half of the 16th century saw the participation of several artists. The interior has a single nave with a high altar made in 1645 by sculptor Giovanni Donato Chiarello, with small sculptures depicting the Coronation of the Virgin.
