Apr 9, 2021 · For a long time, in the History of Art, monochrome was used as a qualifier for different types of shades or grisailles. However, it's only very recently, at the beginning of the 20th century, that this term became a real artistic genre in its own way, just like landscape paintings, still lifes or surrealist ready-mades.

Mar 7, 2022 · Early 20th century’s modern art was marked by the advent of abstraction, a visual language free of any defined representation. Its international dimension was encouraged by the work of innovative artists with unique visions. The term “monochrome” comes from the Greek mono, meaning “only” and chroma, meaning “color”.
The second purpose of monochrome, for some artists, was to reduce the painting or sculpture to its simplest form so that the focus of the piece would be on its pure physical elements; colour, form, texture or the way in which it was made.
- A new take on monochrome. Monochrome is the first major exhibition to explore the history of painting in black and white from the 12th to the 21st centuries.
- Colour was a forbidden fruit. The exhibition begins in the Middle Ages, at a time when colour was, for some, the ‘forbidden fruit’ and prohibited by religious orders for devotional purposes.
- See modern art alongside Old Masters. The exhibition features works by leading modern artists, such as Picasso and Giacometti, as well as some of the most exciting contemporary artists working today, including Gerhard Richter, Chuck Close, Bridget Riley, and Jasper Johns.

- Kazimir Malevich. Fascinated with speed and its corresponding technology like airplanes and cars, Kiev-born artist Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935) joined composer Mikhail Matyushin, and writer Alexei Kruchenykh in 1913 to create a manifesto for the First Futurist Congress.
