Pro Tools' hardware is exactly why it gained its foothold, despite the costs. Trying to posit it as a negative is completely misunderstanding the market back then. Hobbyists were not driving the market, so the fact that they couldn't afford it is immaterial. Studio One isn't more popular because it is overrated.

Disclaimer: I have only really worked with Reaper, Ardour and Studio One so far.
