- Saint Omer is rooted in fact. French writer-director Alice Diop was inspired to make it following the trial of a French-Senegalese graduate student in 2016. She had been charged with murder, after she left her 15 month-old daughter asleep on a French beach at night as the tide was rising. The child’s body was later washed up on shore.
