      • Jaws: The Revenge was the lowest grossing film of the franchise, with $51.9 million total gross on a $23 million budget barely breaking even. It was universally lambasted by critics and audiences alike, who lamented the weak story, poor acting, and cheap-looking effects, and felt like the franchise had run its course.

  2. Sep 8, 2024 · Yes, if you’re of a certain age, you might not even be aware that Jaws has three sequels, those being 1978’s Jaws 2, 1983’s Jaws III (often referred to as Jaws 3-D), and 1987’s Jaws: The Revenge....

    • The score. Jaws The Revenge may seriously unspool as it races towards its climax, but the opening titles – apart from the interesting type face choice for the film’s title – hooked me from the off, with the shark’s point of view as it stalks the shore of Amity Island above and below the surface.
    • A return to Amity Island. With a return to the filming location of Martha’s Vineyard, with was used in both Jaws and Jaws 2 (1978) it feels like the Jaws franchise was coming home, and we were getting to see Amity Island around Christmas, so it was genuinely exciting to see the Island in another season and just to be back there where it all started.
    • The death of Sean Brody. Originally the opening death scene had been planned to be that of Chief Brody (Roy Scheider), but not even the devil could get him to return for Revenge, which I don’t think many Jaws fans would have been able to stomach.
    • Familiar faces. A return to Amity also means a wonderful fleeting return of some familiar faces. Ahead of Sean Brody’s funeral Michael Brody (Lance Guest) and his family arrive to his mum’s house, where she is being comforted by none other than Mrs Taft and Alex Kintner’s mum (another poignancy of a mum who has lost her son to a shark attack comforting another mum whose son died in the same way).
    • Michael Caine. We don’t know why Michael Caine agreed to star in Jaws: The Revenge (money may have had something to do with it), but his sleepy-eyed charisma illuminates the otherwise dreary moments of drama.
    • It has two endings, and they’re both insane. As the rivalry between Ellen Brody and the vengeful shark reaches its apogee, the pair clash in a mind-boggling climax at sea.
    • The shark roars like a lion. The Revenge’s shark really is an incredible creature – and not just because it actually looks less like a living thing than any of the sharks in the previous Jaws movies.
    • It contains some of the best continuity errors ever committed to film. Jaws: The Revenge’s various continuity blunders and other technical errors are almost incalculably numerous.
  3. Acting as a sequel to Jaws 2 (retroactively ignoring the events of Jaws 3-D), the film focuses on a now-widowed Ellen Brody (Gary) and her conviction that a great white shark is seeking revenge on her family, particularly when it kills her youngest son, and follows her to the Bahamas.

  4. Jaws the Revenge is not simply a bad movie, but also a stupid and incompetent one - a ripoff.

  5. Although widely regarded as the worst of the series, I found this to be at least as good as JAWS 3, if not possibly better. For a "bad" movie, JAWS: THE REVENGE is pretty easy viewing, with crystal-clear photography and a good soundtrack (basically an upbeat riff on the classic John Williams music).
