Halo 4's story is focused through Chief, Cortana, and Lasky, but that doesn't mean it isn't a story. Saying that people didn't actually like the story just because they enjoyed the method through which that story is told is rather arbitrary.
IGN called Halo 4 "really Cortana's story", as saving the galaxy is of lesser importance to the Master Chief than saving Cortana, and Cortana's humanity is ultimately the game's focus. [69]
Cortana's death was one of the parts of 4 that got universal praise, for actually having the guts to make a big story decision in the first game of a new trilogy, plus it gave Chief a super interesting setup. I have no idea why they thought going back on that was a good idea.
