Feb 24, 2017 · If movies were rated according to the importance of their subject matter, then George Mendeluk’s “Bitter Harvest,” which tells of the devastating famine Josef Stalin visited on the Ukraine in the 1930s, would deserve an unqualified four stars. If the same film were judged solely on its cinematic quality, though, it would barely merit one star.
Mar 24, 2017 · Allow me to preface my Bitter Harvest critical review.The fact a mainstream film focused on the Holodomor came to the silver screen is no small accomplishment. Millions of Ukrainian heritage, myself included, are deeply grateful to Ian Ihnatowycz, who fully financed Bitter Harvest’s $20 million budget, despite knowing it may not profit at the box office.

BITTER HARVEST feels a lot like those occasional forays into historical drama that Cannon made in the 1980s--THE BERLIN AFFAIR, THE ASSISI UNDERGROUND, HANNA'S WAR--that went for awards while still being unmistakably Cannon. The victims of the Holomodor deserve a better movie than the simplistic and melodramatic BITTER HARVEST. Full review to come.
