If the same film were judged solely on its cinematic quality, though, it would barely merit one star.

Millions of Ukrainian heritage, myself included, are deeply grateful to Ian Ihnatowycz, who fully financed Bitter Harvest’s $20 million budget, despite knowing it may not profit at the box office.

BITTER HARVEST feels a lot like those occasional forays into historical drama that Cannon made in the 1980s--THE BERLIN AFFAIR, THE ASSISI UNDERGROUND, HANNA'S WAR--that went for awards while still being unmistakably Cannon. The victims of the Holomodor deserve a better movie than the simplistic and melodramatic BITTER HARVEST. Full review to come.
