Künstler created his first painting to be produced as a limited edition print in 1976, using the research skills that he acquired as an illustrator in Stroud Farm, a lyrical work that drew inspiration from site visits to the wheat fields of Kansas and Nebraska.
On October 22, 1979, Mort Künstler had his second one-man exhibition at the Hammer Galleries in New York City. It also was the occasion for the release of the first book of Künstler’s art, Mort Künstler’s Epic Paintings of America with a text by Henry Steele Commager.
His paintings are in the permanent collection of over 50 museums, and have been exhibited in over 60 museum one-man shows. His work has been featured in more than 20 books that have sold over 500,000 copies. Yet, Kunstler will frequently remark in interviews “I never worked a day in my life.”
