Prune part of the stem. When planting a blackberry vine as a rooted cutting, prune off two-thirds to three-fourths of the handle or stem, leaving only a short crown behind. Doing so stimulates the buds at the crown of the cutting, encouraging them to grow more vigorously. The "crown" of the cutting refers to the portion of the cutting that extends just above ground once the cutting is planted ...Cut back the canes during the first winter. Most blackberry pruning should be done while the plant is dormant. Depending on the climate, the plant may or may not lose all of its leaves over the winter, but it will stop growing. The best time to prune is right as you start to see the buds swell, or just before, in the late winter or very early spring.
