If you want to reset your keyless door lock, this is what you need to know! The steps to reset a keyless door lock will depend on the manufacturer and model of the lock. For smart locks from Schlage, Kwikset, and Yale, locks can be reset by opening the battery cover and using the reset button.
- Remove the Knob. Insert the wire tool (included in the kit) into the knob hole and depress the knob clip. Pull the knob off the door.

- Remove the Retainer Ring. Use the special retainer ring tool supplied with the kit to force off the thin retainer ring. Push the retainer ring tool against the retainer ring to pop it off the cylinder.
- Remove the Cylinder Plug from the Cylinder. The most critical part of this operation is removing the cylinder plug from the cylinder. The top of the cylinder contains pins and springs, which keep pressure on the keyed pins.
- Preparing to fit a mortice sash lock. When replacing a mortice sash lock, select one that’s compatible with your old lock. If the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the keyhole is 45mm, you need a 64mm lock; if it’s 57mm, you’ll need a 76mm lock.
- Preparing to fit a Euro profile cylinder lock. These locks all have the same profile, so finding and fitting a replacement is more straightforward; however, you need to choose one that’s the same size as the one you’re replacing.
- Preparing to fit a rim cylinder lock. Ensure your new lock is a British standard rim cylinder, as it will have been independently tested to ensure it can withstand all known forms of attack.
- Remove the faceplate, handle and spindle. With the door open, turn the key so the bolt is locked. Take out the key, then remove the screws holding the faceplate, internal door handle and spindle bar.
- Measure for the replacement lock. There are a few measurements you’ll need to take to ensure you purchase an appropriate new lock to replace the old one.
- Shim the door in place. Working on a door while it’s swinging back and forth can be a headache. Rather than letting the door swing freely, you can shim it in place.
- Remove the old door knobs. Depending on the door lock and style, you may have to remove the knobs to replace the lock. In some cases, there may be a set screw under the knob, and you can remove it with an Allen key.
- Remove the cover plates. If you can’t see the screws holding both sides of the lockset together (they’d be visible from the inside), then there is a cover plate covering them.
