The Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy began when Catherine McAuley used an inheritance to build a large house on Baggot Street, Dublin, as a school for poor girls and a shelter for homeless servant girls and women. She was assisted in the works of the house by local women.
She founded 10 convents in Ireland and two in England. After her death, the Congregation spread to six continents, with communities in North America (1842), Australia (1846), South America (1856), Africa (1896), Asia (1953) and Europe. It was recognised as an Institute of Pontifical Right in 1926.
Then in 1843, after Catherine’s death, she brought the first Sisters of Mercy to the United States. She opened up to a hundred houses in the midst of the tragedies of the American civil war. In 1879, nearly 40 years later, she wrote to a young sister who was enquiring about Catherine McAuley and said:
