Pippi Longstocking (Swedish: Pippi Långstrump) is the fictional main character in a series of children's books by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. Pippi was named by Lindgren's daughter Karin, who asked her mother for a get-well story when she was off school.
“Tell me about Pippi Longstocking”, she pleaded, and in that instant Astrid invented what was to become one of the world’s most famous children’s book characters. “Since the name was remarkable, it had to be a remarkable girl”, Astrid said. "Ur-Pippi" - the first Pippi. Then one early spring day, in March 1944 Astrid fell and sprained her ankle.
Pippi Longstocking is the most famous of all of Astrid Lindgren’s characters throughout the world, except in Russia where Karlsson on the Roof wins out, and in Poland and the Czech Republic where the books about the children of Noisy Village are the most read.
Pippi Longstocking began as stories that Lindgren told her young daughter when she was sick; according to Lindgren, her daughter invented the name. Pippi’s big-hearted generosity and utter irreverence endeared her to generations of children, and her indomitability made her a feminist icon.
However, it was her daughter Karin who created the name out of thin air, in a desperate attempt to have her mom stay by her bedside a little longer to tell her an imaginative tale. Not surprisingly, Pippi was 9 years old, the same age as Karin.
