- Plan the subway tile layout. Before starting any tile project, it’s important to check that the floor is level and the walls are flat. Use a level and straightedge to see if the floor is level.
- Draw layout lines. Next, you’ll need to draw vertical layout lines for starting the tile. For a running bond (brick joint) pattern like ours, you’ll need two vertical lines, half a tile width apart.
- Spread the mastic. Using a 1/4 x 1/4-in. notched trowel, spread only as much mastic as you can cover with tile in about 15 minutes—usually about 10 sq. ft.
- Subway Tile and Wallpaper. Traditional subway tiles are usually white, like the tiles lining half of the wall behind this bathroom’s sink. But you can still easily tie color and bold patterns into your bathroom design by lining the top half of the wall with wallpaper.
- Mixed Bathroom Subway Tiles. Bright white subway tiles create a clean look for the shower in this bathroom. For visual interest, they’re offset by marble tiles on the floor and much smaller honeycomb tiles lining the wall behind the sink, creating contrast with the stark white.
- Herringbone Shower Tile. Though the majority of the gray tiles in this bathroom are placed in traditional subway tile rows, a section of the shower wall puts a twist on the pattern.
- Black Bathroom Subway Tiles. Give subway tiles a whole new look by choosing black instead of traditional white. The dark-color tiles become a focal point in a bathroom with marble floors and counters, white trim, and gray walls.

Dec 1, 2015 · With typical white ceramic subway tile, you’ll have to have cuts on the ends of your rows. There’s no way around it. If you are starting a row with a whole tile/half tile then the half tile is a cut tile. Most ceramic and porcelain tiles have a slightly rounded edge on them.
