Corte (/ ˈkɔːrteɪ /, / ˈkɔːrti /; French: [kɔʁte]; Italian: [ˈkorte]; [ 3 ] Corsican: Corti, [ˈkorti]) is a commune in the Haute-Corse department, on the island of Corsica, France. It is the fourth-largest commune in Corsica after Ajaccio, Bastia, and Porto-Vecchio.
Corte is a town in the mountainous heart of Corsica, approximately 70 kilometres south-west of Bastia and 80 kilometres north-east of Ajaccio: the main road across the island is between Bastia and Ajaccio and passes through Corte, so the town is less than 1 1/2 hours from either of them.

A small town in the heart of Corsica, Corte was the capital of the island (from 1755-1769 under Pasquale Paoli - a name you will hear often in Corsica). As well as being an interesting town in itself Corte is in a great location for exploring the mountains, valleys and scenery of central Corsica and the surrounding Natural Park.
Characterised by its old schist houses clinging to the rock, Corte can be separated into two distinct sections: the historical and cultural upper part of town, and the more structured and commercial lower part with its steep and winding narrow streets.
