Sportverein Werder Bremen von 1899 e. V. (German pronunciation: [ɛs faʊ̯ ˌvɛʁdɐ ˈbʁeːmən] ⓘ), commonly known as Werder Bremen, Werder or simply Bremen, is a German professional sports club based in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.
Werder was founded in 1899 (as FV Werder Bremen, the name shifted to SV Werder Bremen in 1920; SV standing for Sportverein, meaning sports club in English), by a group of sixteen young men who had just won a football for placing first in a tug-of-war competition.
As football became more and more professional starting in the 1930s Werder began acquiring future German internationals such as Hans Tibulski or Matthias Heidemann, the latter being Werder's first ever German international. Werder were already back then playing matches in Weser Stadium.
