The Saltburn Cliff Lift is a funicular railway in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Redcar and Cleveland in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. It provides access to Saltburn Pier and the seafront from the town.
Discovering the Cliff Lift - Saltburn's Inclined Tramway Saltburn by the Sea as a dignified Victorian resort grew up around the former smuggling village of Old Saltburn, when the industrialists of Middlesbrough needed somewhere to escape the dirt & grime and the railways could transport them easily to the coast.
Jun 1, 2023 · The Saltburn cliff lift runs from mid-March to the end of October and helps connect the pier to the old town and saves people climbing the 173 steps to the top. It’s open 7 days a week in peak season and runs from 10:30am – 5pm with the last tram leaving at 4:55pm.
This iconic piece of Victorian engineering, Saltburn Cliff Tramway is the second oldest water funicular in the world and the oldest in the United Kingdom. Constructed and opened in 1884, it is still operated in exactly the same way as it was designed by our Victorian forebears.
Saltburn-by-the-Sea in Redcar, on northeast England’s coast, is home to Britain’s oldest operating water-balanced cliff lift – a funicular powered by water – which you can ride up and down between town and beach, taking in sea views and imagining Victorian holidaymakers doing the same when it was built in the late 19th century.
