May 15, 2023 · Why do the prefixes start with a “+”? The “+” sign ensures that the call also goes abroad. Depending on the country and its area code, it would otherwise not be possible to distinguish between a domestic call and a call to another country. In Europe with the area codes +41 (Switzerland), +49 (Germany) or +43 (Austria) this is less of a problem.
