If you can't unlock your iOS device using Touch ID, can't enroll a fingerprint, or you're asked to enter your passcode, learn what to do.
The Touch ID sensor is either in the Home button or—on iPad mini (6th generation) and iPad Air (4th and 5th generation)—the top button. When you follow the steps below, the onscreen instructions will tell you which button to use. If you're not sure, learn which button is which on your iPad.
Follow these steps. Try using Touch ID after each step:
1.Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
2.Make sure that your fingers and the Touch ID sensor are clean and dry.* For the Touch ID sensor, use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe off any dirt or debris.
3.Your finger should cover the Touch ID sensor completely, touching the surrounding metal ring. While Touch ID is scanning, you shouldn't tap too quickly or move your finger around.
4.If you're using a case or screen protector, make sure it doesn't cover the Touch ID sensor or the surrounding ring.
If the previous steps didn't help, you see "Failed—unable to complete Touch ID setup", or either of the following happen when you go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, or contact Apple Support:
•You can't turn on Touch ID
You might need to enter your passcode or Apple ID instead of using Touch ID in these situations:
•You just restarted your device
•Your fingerprint isn't recognized five times in a row
•You haven't unlocked your device in more than 48 hours
•You haven’t unlocked your iPhone with the passcode in the last 6.5 days, and you haven’t unlocked it with Face ID or Touch ID in the last 4 hours
•Your iPhone receives a remote lock command

If it vibrates or you hear a sound but nothing displays on the screen, then the screen is most likely the problem. Try replacing it and see if the display is still black. You can purchase a new display assembly here. The guide to replace the iPhone 7 Plus front panel assembly can be found here.
Dec 16, 2022 · Wipe both your finger and the Home button off and dry them completely before using Touch ID. The sequential improvement process can sometimes go off-track (i.e., instead of getting better, an error can occur, and it can get worse). When that starts to happen, delete the fingerprint and re-register.
