Clem Kadiddlehopper goes to a janitorial school in Washington DC, where his stupidity is noticed by the Army. Colonel Hush-Hush (guest Peter Falk) decides he will be perfect for a secret project as he is too dumb to remember anything he sees or hears.
By 1954, Skelton's program moved to CBS, where it was expanded to one hour and renamed The Red Skelton Hour in 1962. Despite high ratings, the show was canceled by CBS in 1970, as the network believed that more youth-oriented programs were needed to attract younger viewers and their spending power.
In September 1962, the program was again expanded to a full hour (becoming The Red Skelton Hour) and remained in this longer format for the balance of its CBS run. The format of the program itself during this period was quite simple.
Red's guests are comedian Ed Wynn. singer Vikki Carr, and character actress Mary Wickes. In the sketch, a visiting Sultan (Wynn) wants San Fernando Red to sell him an American wife. In the Silent Spot, Red is an outdoor chef with a brand-new barbecue. Vikki sings 'Bye, Bye, Blackbird" and "Loverland."
