The bridge traces its history back to 1888 at the peak of the ‘marvellous Melbourne’ era. This was when the vast wealth of the goldfields gave rise to a four-decade gold boom. Sandridge Railway Bridge however, lost its lustre and was closed in 1987 before the Victorian State Government redeveloped it to the remarkable attraction it is today.

This bridge is a remnant of the former Port Melbourne railway line, opened in 1854, the first railway line in Victoria, which connected Port Melbourne’s piers and Flinders St Station. This Bridge, built in 1888, is the third in this location.
Despite its initial functionality, the bridge became an eyesore after its last use in 1987 until its $15.5 million restoration by Melbourne City Council in 2003. While its industrial aesthetic may not appeal to everyone, Sandridge Bridge remains a significant memorial to those who have shaped Melbourne's diverse community.
Sandridge is the original name of Port Melbourne, from whence new immigrants took the railway to the city of Melbourne. Sandridge Bridge was constructed by David Munro (1844-1898), a significant colonial contractor and engineer. It is said that John Monash, then a young engineer, worked on the project.
