He first rose to prominence for his roles in the Broadway productions of Mister Roberts (1948–1951) and Picnic (1953), [1] the former of which earned him a Theatre World Award for his performance.

After his parents divorced, his mother married Dewey Meeker, and Ralph later took his stepfather's last name and became known as Ralph Meeker. Ralph grew up in Chicago. For a time, he lived with his grandmother.
