Metz and Nancy are about 50 minutes apart by car. A Strasbourg-Nancy-Metz-Strasbourg round trip would be about 5 hours of driving before you did any exploring. I visited Metz and Nancy this summer. The museum of the palace of the Dukes of Lorraine was under renovation, so may not be open.
