The ball for the 2022 World Cup is named Al Rihla -which means 'the journey' in Arabic. It's inspired by several elements of Qatari culture including the language, architecture, iconic boats and the nation's flag.

Al Rihla travels faster in flight than any ball in World Cup history, according to FIFA. It was rigorously tested on the pitch by players and in wind tunnels before it's final production. Al Rihla will be the 14th successive match ball that has been produced by adidas for the FIFA World Cup. The sportswear giant started their reign of creating match balls with the Telstar at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Since then they have produced a new match ball for every World Cup and every Women's World Cup since 2011.

    Telstar

The Telstar was the first match ball produced by adidas for the purpose of a World Cup - the 1970 edition in Mexico. It features the iconic 32-panel black-and-white design that was used on balls for years to come. FIFA brought back the Telstar for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, with a separate version for the group stages and knockout rounds.

    Jabulani

The Jabulani featured at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and was notable for the controversy surrounding its performance. According to some players and fans, the aerodynamics were an issue with the ball meaning the flight path was too unpredictable.

    Brazuca

Used in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the Brazuca was the first match ball to be named by the fans. After the controversy surrounding the Jabulani in 2010, adidas claimed it was the most-tested ball they had ever produced.
