On September 13, 2021, Freeform ordered a pilot episode of The Nanny. On June 30, 2022, Freeform picked up The Watchful Eye for a series order. The series was also officially titled The Watchful Eye.
Season 1
On September 13, 2021, along with the pilot order, Andrea Londo was cast as the titular character Elena Santos, alongside Warren Christie as Matthew. Also cast were Kelly Bishop (Mrs. Ivey), Amy Acker (Tory), Jon Ecker (Scott), Lex Lumpkin (Elliot), Henry Joseph Samiri (Jasper), and Aliyah Royale (Ginny). On June 30, 2022, Mariel Molino was cast as the titular character Elena Santos, replacing Andrea Londo, following the character being reworked after the pilot, leading to the recasting.
The first season began filming on April 26, 2022 and wrapped on September 1, 2022. Filming is taking place in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.
