Gather Your Tools
The equipment required for pruning blackberries is simple. Pruners, loppers, and gloves are all you need. I use a pair of bypass pruners like this one, which provides a clean cut without compressing or tearing the plant. Dormant Pruning
Most blackberry pruning should be done while the plant is dormant. Depending on the climate, the plant may or may not lose all of its leaves over the winter, but it will stop growing. The best time to prune is right as you start to see the buds swell, or just before, in the late winter or very early spring.
Pruning During the Growing Season
Once the warm weather hits, the blackberry plants will start growing. The 2nd-year floricanes will produce leaves, branches, and blossoms. New primocanes will grow from the base of the plant at the crown.

This is the time to cut the main cane of trailing blackberries at the top to a height of 3-4 feet (1-1.5m). Now’s also a great time to double-check that everything’s starting to bud out and survived the winter.

Follow the same pruning procedure if you have trailing canes. These are the brambles that lie on the ground unless you tie them to a stake. Prune trailing blackberries in winter in the same way as the erect canes.

Anytime Pruning. Most blackberry pruning is done at the end of winter or early spring when the plant is dormant. But the plants should be pruned at any time to remove dead canes or damaged/diseased branches and fruit. On blackberry plants, prune away dead growth any time you see it.
