It was built during the 1890s for Hamilton McKown Twombly and his wife, Florence Adele Vanderbilt, a member of the Vanderbilt family. Now part of the Florham Campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University, the mansion is one of the ten largest houses in the United States.
Florence Adele Vanderbilt Twombly (née Vanderbilt; January 8, 1854 – April 11, 1952) was an American socialite and heiress. She was a member of the prominent Vanderbilt family. She and her husband Hamilton McKown Twombly built Florham, a gilded age estate in Madison, New Jersey.
Oct 16, 2018 · Completed in 1897, for Hamilton McKown Twombly (1849-1910) and his wife Florence Adele Vanderbilt (1854–1952). Built by the sister of the men who put up The Breakers, Marble House etc., the Twombly's 102-room mansion - inspired by the "new" 17th century wing of an old English palace - was surrounded by parkland and a working farm.
About the Vanderbilt-Twombly Estate. Audio tour of the Mansion, created by FDU students. The Twomblys of Florham video with Walter Savage, Carol Bere, and Arthur Vanderbilt II, recorded March 29, 2009.
In 1953 the estate’s existence as a Twombly home for over half a century ended when the Twomblys’ unmarried daughter, Ruth, died. The surviving daughter, Florence Twombly Burden, sold the Mansion’s lavish contents at public auction in 1955. The splendor of Florham, and its Vanderbilt mystique ended.
The mansion, in particular, still captures a great deal of its original look, enhanced by replicas of many Vanderbilt-Twombly family paintings, paintings of the estate’s creators, period tapestries, and decorative touches. All these may be viewed by visitors.
The Twombly Mansion was the country estate of Florence Vanderbilt and Hamilton Twombly, and was used only four months of the year, September, October, May, and June. For the remainder of the year, they summered at their home in Newport, Rhode Island and wintered at their mansion on Fifth Avenue overlooking Central Park in Manhattan.
