Countess Sophie Nikolaievna of Merenberg, Countess de Torby (1 June 1868 – 14 September 1927), was the elder daughter of Prince Nikolaus Wilhelm of Nassau and his morganatic wife, Natalia Alexandrovna Pushkina (who had been granted the title of Countess of Merenberg).
In 1891, Grand Duke Michael fell in love with Countess Sophie von Merenberg. The story goes that the Grand Duke met Sophie on the French Riviera. He was a cavalry officer and he saved her from a horse that had run away with her. She immediately fell in love with her rescuer.

Sophie Nikolaievna von Merenberg. Countess de Torby. Born the daughter of Nikolaus Wilhelm Prinz von Nassau-Weilburg and Nataliya Aleksandrovna Pushkina, Countess von Merenberg. She married Mikhail Mikhailovich Romanov, Grand Duke of Russia on March 10, 1891 at San Remo, Italy.
Sophie was later created Countess de Torby by her uncle, Adolphe, Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Sue to her own Morganatic marriage to Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia, the title was extended to her children.
