Aang discovers the secret identity that Katara has adopted, and they destroy the nearby factory that has been polluting the river, prompting soldiers to attack the village. Katara reveals herself as the Painted Lady, saves the villagers with the help of her friends, and is thanked by the real Painted Lady afterward.
The Painted Lady was originally a human and lived before the 3rd century BG. She had a close relationship with nature and a strong connection to the spirits. Due to her spirituality, she transcended into the Spirit World following her death.
When the Gaang comes upon a fishing village that has been having hard times due to the pollution from a local factory, Katara cannot resist helping the villagers, though she does so in secret. Before long, word in the village is that the local river spirit, the Painted Lady, has been granting them succor, and soon Katara takes the guise of this ...
- Who is the Painted Lady? I like that the “mystery” of the Painted Lady’s identity is underplayed, because the answer should be obvious as soon as we hear that the spirit has been visiting the village.
- “I will never, ever turn my back on people who need me!” This episode is a great spotlight for Katara’s optimism and compassion. She has no qualms about pausing their overall mission to help people; she simply can’t sit by and do nothing.
- Sokka the Pragmatist (II) Sokka’s planning skills are strongly highlighted here, complete with giant timeline, and he isn’t going to be swayed. So it’s no surprise that Katara ends up sneaking out and adopting a persona in order to help the villagers.
- A Superstitious and Cowardly Lot. The majority of the third act deals with the fire nation officials, whose factory Katara and Aang had destroyed the night before, starting to destroy the village before being scared off by a hoax.
