Hey, guys. Fowler here, stepping in to review the Season 2 finale of FX's The Bridge. Some background. I did not review The Bridge for IGN during Season 1. I also did not really enjoy Season 1. At least not the "serial killer revenge" plot which took up the bulk of the time. And yes, I know that the series was mirroring the events from the Danish-Swedish show it's based on. But watching Marco, a character we hardly knew at that point, both ruin his own marriage via a random adulterous moment and then have his life ruined by a horror movie-style psycho made for a jumbled, unsatisfying show.

Season 2 however, which producer Elwood Reid purposefully distanced from the foreign series in order to do his own thing, was markedly better. It had just a really great, overall feel with a much more sprawling story involving what felt like a richer tapestry of characters. Plus, for a while the focus was on Matthew Lillard and Emily Rios' reporter characters and that really helped amp up the over-arching government conspiracy angle. It wasn't The Wire, but the show was reaching for a larger overview of the politics, police, and crooks. And it didn't lose its sinister sting either, thanks to Franka Potente's Eleanor Nacht and Ramón Franco's returning Fausto Galvan.

"Jubilex," as a season ender was good, but the one big problem when you've got an underdog story like this - meaning local police and news hounds vs. the shadowy CIA - is that justice will never truly enter the equation in the end. No one will actually "win." And here Agent Buckley (Ian Hart) was taken out by his own people in an obvious attempt, to all involved, to cover up the entire mess. So the "boots on the ground" guy got killed, but the true perpetrators escaped scot-free. In fact, Buckley's handlers seemed like they wanted to take him out a few episodes ago, but the trigger wasn't pulled until now because - well - it was the finale.

The Bridge's Season 2 finale didn't put a definitive stamp on the season, choosing more of a "running in cycles" style ending befitting a story about never-ending layers of bureaucracy and conspiracy. Foot soldiers would fall, but not the so much the generals who commanded them. Plus, Linder surviving his gunshot wound felt a bit phony. Especially ...
