The Astronauts developed out of a group, The Stormtroupers, which was originally formed at Boulder High School, Boulder, Colorado in 1956 by Jon "Storm" Patterson (vocals, guitar), Robert Graham "Bob" Demmon (guitar; born February 11, 1939 [2]), and Brad Leach (drums).

May 27, 2022 · R.I.P. Jon “Stormy” Patterson, who passed away on Tuesday morning following illness. Patterson was the last remaining member of the Astronauts, Colorado’s premier group of the early ‘60s—the landlocked surf band from Boulder outsold the rival Beach Boys in Japan.
With Boulder High School pal Jon "Stormy" Patterson, also a guitarist, he formed The Stormtroopers in the late '50s with another school chum, drummer Brad Leach. Two lead guitarists and a guy with a couple of sticks.
The band was originally born in 1956, when Bob Demmon, a student at Boulder High School, teamed up with fellow classmate, Stormy Patterson to form a rock group. Demmon played guitar and Stormy played bass.
But the Astronauts caught the sun, sand and summer fun from Boulder, Colorado—1,000 miles away from the nearest ocean. Circa 1962, the Astronauts played rock ‘n’ roll and R&B hits of the day to pre-hippie crowds around the University of Colorado campus.
