Born in Lviv in 1921, Lem lived in Kraków from 1946. He died there March 27, 2006. Life and Work. Lem was the son of the successful laryngologist, Samuel Lehm and Sabina Woller, a relative of Marian Hemar (he recalls his childhood in the autobiographical, High Castle ).

Lem worked slowly toward a medical degree at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, but his family had lost all of its property during the war, and he was essentially penniless.
