A storm cell is an air mass that contains up and down drafts in convective loops and that moves and reacts as a single entity, functioning as the smallest unit of a storm-producing system.

  2. May 6, 2024 · The term supercell is used by meteorologists to describe a breed of long-lasting thunderstorms that rotate and are accompanied by dangerous weather conditions, including large hail, damaging...

Often called popcorn convection, single-cell thunderstorms are small, brief, weak storms that grow and die within an hour or so. They are typically driven by heating on a summer afternoon. Single-cell storms may produce brief heavy rain and lightning.

A multi-cell storm is a common, garden-variety thunderstorm in which new updrafts form along the leading edge of rain-cooled air (the gust front). Individual cells usually last 30 to 60 minutes, while the system as a whole may last for many hours. Multicell storms may produce hail, strong winds, brief tornadoes, and/or flooding.

A squall line is a group of storms arranged in a line, often accompanied by squalls of high wind and heavy rain. Squall lines tend to pass quickly and are less prone to produce tornadoes than are supercells. They can be hundreds of miles long but are typically only 10 or 20 miles wide. A supercell is a long-lived (greater than 1 hour) and highly or...

Mesoscale convective complex (MCC)A particular type of MCS, an MCC is a large, circular, long-lived cluster of showers and thunderstorms identified by satellite. It often emerges out of other storm types during the late-night and early-morning hours. MCCs can cover an entire state.

  3. On the thunderstorm spectrum, supercells are the least common type of thunderstorm, but they have a high propensity to produce severe weather, including damaging winds, very large hail, and sometimes weak to violent tornadoes.

  4. Thunderstorms form when warm, moist air rises into cold air. The warm air becomes cooler, which causes moisture, called water vapor, to form small water droplets — a process called condensation. The cooled air drops lower in the atmosphere, warms, and rises again.

  5. Apr 15, 2024 · A supercell is an elite type of thunderstorm accompanied by dangerous weather conditions including large hail, damaging winds and, sometimes, tornadoes.

  6. Jul 23, 1997 · The "intense" updraft storm is almost invariably the supercell, a storm capable of producing the most devastating weather, including violent tornadoes. With the two multicell storm categories, we have defined four basic storm types from the thunderstorm spectrum.
