      • Inagaki’s two Musashi trilogies are based on the wildly popular novel Musashi, by Eiji Yoshikawa (and on a play based on that novel), which appeared in more than a thousand serial newspaper installments from 1935 to 1939. Yoshikawa studied historical records and Musashi’s own writings but invented characters and changed the sequence of events.
