Disney semi-retired the Buena Vista name in May 2007 and the company was designated Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. [2] Portions of the Walt Disney World Resort are located in the city of Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The city's namesake lake was known as Black Lake before Walt Disney Enterprises acquired the land in the 1960s.
In April 2007, Disney retired the Buena Vista brand. Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group and Buena Vista Pictures Distribution were renamed as Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, respectively. Hollywood Pictures was also retired as well.
In 1961, Disney incorporated Buena Vista International (BVI), [15] distributing its first PG-rated film, Take Down, in January 1979. [10] The low-budget movie was not produced by the Disney studios and was acquired from an independent studio, making The Black Hole the first PG-rated Disney film. [16]
Buena Vista is only a distribution studio working for Disney, and does not exist as a separate company. Some home video prints of Disney movies released under RKO instead rely on later re-release under Buena Vista.
